
The first day of college, my phone got stolen. The second day, my roommate's phone got stolen. It was not exactly the orientation experience I had imagined. Like many students moving away from home for the first time, I arrived in Chennai excited about new opportunities, new friendships, and a fresh chapter of life. What I was not prepared for was how quickly I would learn one of the city's most important lessons, not everyone lives by the same rules you grew up with.
Coming from Kerala, the experience felt almost unreal. Back home, there was an unspoken understanding of trust. If someone accidentally left a phone at a restaurant, chances were high that it would still be there when they returned. That’s just how the culture was. Responsibility and kindness were qualities that were simply part of everyday life.
When Culture Shock Comes in Unexpected Forms
When people talk about moving to a new city, they usually prepare you for the obvious adjustments. They tell you that the language might be different, the food may take time to get used to, the weather might feel uncomfortable, and the pace of life could be much faster than what you are used to. These are the visible changes that everyone expects. You mentally prepare yourself for them long before you pack your bags.
Only a few people talk about the adjustment of trust. When my phone was stolen on the very first day of college, I convinced myself it was an unfortunate incident. But when my roommate's phone disappeared the very next day, it no longer felt like bad luck. It felt like a pattern I did not understand. As the weeks passed, I heard more stories from friends and classmates. Phones were disappearing and laptops went missing. Some of my friends lost their devices more than once. At first, I reacted with disbelief asking myself how this could happen so frequently and why didn't people simply return lost items.
These questions reflected my own assumptions more than the reality around me. I was comparing a new city to the standards I had grown up with, expecting them to be the same. But every place operates differently and understanding that difference became one of the most valuable lessons I learned.
The Hidden Rules Every City Has
I stopped asking why things were different and started observing how things worked. Instead of comparing every experience with what I had known back home, I began observing the habits of those who had already adapted to the city. It was only then that I realized that what seemed like paranoia to me was actually adaptation. Others were not living in fear, they were living with awareness.
Every city has its own unwritten rules. Some places reward openness and trust while others require vigilance. Some cities encourage spontaneous conversations with strangers, while in others, people prefer to keep to themselves. In some places, leaving your laptop unattended in a café for five minutes might be perfectly normal. In others, it could be an expensive mistake. Some communities naturally operate on a high level of social trust, while others function on a higher level of personal responsibility and caution. The challenge is not determining whether a city is good or bad. The challenge is learning how to adapt effectively. When we move to a new environment, we usually bring our old assumptions with us. We expect the world to operate according to the standards we are familiar with. But successful adaptation requires observation before any judgment.
This lesson extends far beyond cities. I have seen the exact same pattern play out in workplaces. Every organization has its own culture, its own communication style, and its own unwritten expectations. Someone who performs exceptionally well in one company may struggle in another not because they are less capable, but because they are operating with assumptions that no longer fit the new environment. The professionals who grow are mostly the ones who observe first, understand the culture, and then adapt without losing their core values. That brings me to one of the biggest misconceptions about adaptation, that it changes who you are. True adaptation is more about becoming aware of where you are while remaining grounded in the values that define you.
Why Every Discomfort Carries a Lesson
Instead of asking, "Why is this happening?" I started asking, "What is this teaching me?" Then the situation did not change, but my response to it did. Frustration turned into learning as the story of a stolen phone turned into an unexpected life lesson.
Adapting to reality is more useful than wishing reality to be different. This applies in almost every stage of life like the first job teaches you that technical skills alone are not enough. Today, whenever I step into a new city or a completely unfamiliar situation, I carry that lesson with me. I remind myself not to assume that my previous experiences are universal. I observe first, learn the unwritten rules and act accordingly.
Moving to Chennai made me a more intentional person. The city was teaching me awareness, and I carry that lesson even now in how I lead, work and approach every unfamiliar environment I enter in my building healthtech journey.
